The Netherlands has a rich history shaped by trade, tolerance and innovation. From its medieval trading towns and the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century—when merchants, scientists and artists made Amsterdam, Haarlem and Rotterdam hubs of commerce and culture—to its modern role as a center for design, water management and progressive social policy, the country has long mixed practicality with creativity. Its successful struggle for independence from Spain in the 16th–17th centuries produced a republic that prized commerce, navigation and relative religious freedom; later industrialization and urbanization deepened a pragmatic, civic-minded society.
That history feeds directly into a contemporary culture that’s open and welcoming. For tourists this means easy access to world-class art, lively neighborhood scenes, and a social atmosphere that encourages exploration: whether you’re wandering museum exhibits, joining a canal tour, or stopping at a neighborhood brown café, the Netherlands invites curious visitors to participate in its open culture and relaxed, sociable everyday life.
